Islington Eating Guide

Islington is filled to the brim with outstanding eateries, from fine-dining to gastro pubs and everything in between. We’ve compiled a list of the best cafes, gastro pubs and restaurants in the N1 neighbourhood.

Arguably the best restaurant in N1, this contemporary Italian trattoria has an impressive reputation for fresh pasta, charcoal grilling and moreish cheeses. The menu changes daily and is closely linked to the seasons. Don’t miss Trullo’s beef shin ragu; it’s been on the menu since the beginning and is seriously good.

Address: 300-302 St Paul’s Road, N1 2LH

Smokehouse, situated behind Canonbury Square Gardens, is home to some of the best fire-cooked meat in the capital. We’d recommend ordering its speciality, lamb shoulder; the meat is so tender that it can be cut with a spoon.

Address: 63-69 Canonbury Road, N1 2DG

Duke of Cambridge

This Islington gem is hidden away on the back streets behind Essex Road. The Duke of Cambridge serves an entirely organic and sustainable menu, which has an emphasis on seasonal and homegrown produce. A current menu highlight is the grilled mackerel with tender broccoli, aubergine and squid ink.

Address: 30 St Peter’s Street, N1 8JT

Telephone: 020 7359 3066

Afghan Kitchen

Afghan Kitchen is responsible for putting Afghan cuisine on the map in London. Both the restaurant and menu are refreshingly straight-forward; imagine simple wooden furniture and just a handful of chicken, lamb and vegetarian main courses. The restaurant’s Afghan Naan is also a particular delight.

Address: 35 Islington Green, N1 8DU

Telephone: 020 7359 8019

Islington boasts the original and flagship Ottolenghi. The jewel in the crown serves up a host of moreish Middles Eastern inspired pastries, colourful salads and fusion main dishes. Booking is advisable as this branch is extremely popular.

Address: 287 Upper Street, N1 2TZ

Telephone: 020 7288 1454

Le Mercury

Renowned for its reliably delicious cuisine at great prices, this traditional French bistro has been a local favourite for the past 30 years. It also has a great atmosphere to match.

Address: 140 Upper Street, N1 1QY

Yipin China

This backstreet beauty is a homage to the cuisine of China’s Hunan and Sichuan provinces. There’s a focus on spicy, bold and earthy flavours with highlights including eye-wateringly hot Sichuan chicken, stewed pork belly and soft shell crab.

Address: 70-72 Liverpool Road, N1 0QD

Scandi-inspired Rök has a wonderful, neighbourhood feel. It’s seasonal menu has made it a firm favourite with Islington dwellers; think exquisite oysters, pickled ingredients, smoked fish and fire-cooked meats.
